SOUTH PORTLAND – The University of Southern Maine Huskies and the Eastern Connecticut State University Warriors renewed their Little East Conference baseball rivalry Friday splitting a doubleheader at the Wainright Athletic Complex.
The Huskies rallied from a 2-0 deficit to take the opening game 4-2 behind the two-hit, 5.2 inning relief effort from sophomore left-hander Mark Schmidt (Gorham, Maine). The Warriors salvaged a split in the nightcap by building a 9-1 lead, then hanging on for a 9-6 victory.
The split leaves Southern Maine at 15-7 overall and 4-2 in the conference. Eastern Connecticut now stands 15-10-1 overall and 4-3 in the conference play.
Bowdoin 6, Tufts 4
BRUNSWICK – The Bowdoin College baseball team rallied to score three runs in the seventh inning en route to a 6-4 win over Tufts in the Polar Bears’ home-opener on Friday afternoon. Bowdoin improves to 11-8 (3-3 NESCAC) with the win while Tufts drops to 11-8 (2-2).
Ian Goldberg doubled to lead off the game for Tufts and came home later in the inning on an RBI groundout by Corey Pontes. Tufts doubled their lead in the second frame when an RBI double by Alex Perry plated Dave Leresche, giving the visitors a 2-0 edge.
Bowdoin trimmed the lead to a single run in the bottom of the inning as a bases-loaded walk to Marc Dallaire brought home Matt Ruane.
Trinity 6, Colby 0
WATERVILLE – Tim Kiely improved to 6-0 on the season, and three Trinity College batters homered as the Bantams took a 14-2 win over Colby College in New England Small College Athletic Conference East Division baseball Friday at Coombs Field.
Kiely worked the first seven innings and struck out 10 and walked none. He has 39 strikeouts and no walks in nearly 42 innings of work this season.
Graham led the Bantams with three hits. Chandler Barnard, Ryan Piacentini, Killeen, and Matt Sullivan all had two hits.
Softball
Trinity 7, Bowdoin 5
BRUNSWICK – The Trinity College softball team defeated Bowdoin College 7-5 in the 2008 home opener for the Polar Bears. Trinity, who rapped 11 hits on the day, improve to 13-6 (7-0 NESCAC) while the Polar Bears dip to 15-7 (1-5).
The Bantams scored three times in the first inning and never relinquished the lead, despite a late Bowdoin rally.
Bowdoin’s offense was paced by three hits from Lord. Clare Ronan scored twice, while Coven collected two RBI’s. Julia Jacobs (7-4) went the distance, allowing seven runs in the loss.
Colby drops two
WATERVILLE – Christy Tinker had a home run in each game as the 17th-ranked Tufts University softball team took 7-1 and 11-0 victories over Colby College in New England Small College Athletic Conference East Division play Friday.
Tinker had a two-run homer in the fourth inning of the first game to help the Jumbos pull away for good. She also had a leadoff blast in the fourth inning of the nightcap. Samantha Kuhles had three hits and two runs in the first game, while Danielle Lopez and Tinker both had two hits, two runs, and two RBI.
