AUBURN – Timothy Plummer, 50, of Oxford died Friday, April 11, at the Hospice House after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born Nov, 7, 1957, to Ethelbert and the late Eleanor (Kane) Plummer. Growing up in Gray, he developed an interest in race cars as he watched them drive past his house on route to Oxford Plains Speedway.
When his cousins, Jim and Peter and his Uncle Mike started racing, Tim was hooked on the sport for the rest of his life. He was either at a race working on a pit crew, watching a race on television or attending a race. It was his passion and he attended many NASCAR events.
After moving to Jay in 1972, he enjoyed hunting and fishing throughout his high school years. He graduated from high school in 1976. Upon graduating, he worked at Norwalk Shoe and B.H. Bass in North Jay. In 1980, he decided to learn a trade and attended Washington County Technical School in Calais to study welding.
After graduating in 1981, he went to work for Bath Iron Works and stayed until the illness forced him to take a leave. He was very dedicated to his job and took pride in his work. He felt that every ship that went out of there had a piece of him on it. He loved to see the ships go together.
He enjoyed landscaping and gardening in his yard. Reading was a passion of his and had been since childhood. He was proud of his personal collection of books and magazines. He did not just read for pleasure, he read for knowledge.
One of his proudest days was attending his daughter, Janis’ graduation from college. In 2007, he was one of the recipient of a “Hero Award” presented to him after he was nominated by his nephew, Jake.
He leaves behind his father, Ethelbert of Oxford; his daughter, Janis of Charlotte, N.C.; two brothers, John and wife, Diane, of New Gloucester and Kevin and wife, Joline, of Oxford; two sisters, Beth Derenberger and husband, Paul, of Oxford and Maureen Reuter and husband, Kevin, of Wetumpka, Ala.; nine nieces and nephews; six great-nieces and nephews; his former wife, Tammy, whom he remained friends with and his cat, Brutus; and many relatives and friends.
He wanted us to thank all and everyone who cared for him through this long journey of illness.
