WILMINGTON, Mass. – While his teammates have extended their playoff series against the Montreal Canadiens by at least one game, it remains unclear whether Boston Bruins center Patrice Bergeron will play again this season.

Bergeron has been held out of the playoffs as a precaution because of the Grade 3 concussion he suffered in October.

“I’m still waiting for the OK from the doctors,” Bergeron said after practice Monday. “I went to see them and they wanted me to have some more practices before getting back out there.

“It’s the doctors’ decision right now.”

Bruins coach Claude Julien did not indicate when Bergeron might be able to return.

Following consecutive overtime games including Sunday night’s 2-1 win by the Bruins – Monday’s practice was limited to only a few Boston players. But defenseman Andrew Alberts managed a strong hit on Bergeron along the boards.

“Thats what I need,” Bergeron said. “If I want to get back there, I need hits like that to see how I feel.”

Bergeron has been meeting regularly with neurological doctors to monitor his progress from the concussion suffered on Oct. 27 when Philadelphia’s Randy Jones drove him into the corner boards. He has not played since.Game 4 between the Bruins and Canadiens is set for Tuesday night at TD Banknorth Garden. Montreal leads the series 2-1.

“There’s no timetable, exactly,” Bergeron said of his return. “Obviously, I’m going to try and get in contact with them again sometime but for now, it’s disappointing. I’d like to be out there and help the guys, but right now I’ve got to listen to the doctors and do what’s best for me.”
