The Boston Science Museum has always been a place of learning. But the type of learning that I experienced wasn’t at all like the learning I receive in school. Do you remember when you were a little kid, in kindergarten, and anything new or unusual was magical, amazing, wonderful, perhaps scary? You didn’t necessarily understand it, but you marveled at its newness, the fact that you hadn’t learned about or seen something like it before. Whenever I’ve gone to the Boston Science Museum, that is how I’ve felt. As soon as you walk through the doors, it feels as if your mindset has taken a trip back in time to be able to learn and experience things the same way that you did when you were much younger.
As I walked in the doors, I looked up and saw flying machines that had been designed over the ages. One was made by DaVinci, another by the Wright Brothers. I stood, my gaze not ahead of me but on the ceiling, absorbing it all, amazed beyond comprehension. That was the beginning of my trip. When we got to the museum’s playground, which holds numerous activities for “children” of all ages, I was once again struck by the complex simplicity of the world of science. A teeter-totter helps you understand weight, running helps you understand energy, and other simple and fun games taught you not to be afraid of the “big, bad world” of science that is out there.
I have learned by observation that when in the mindset that is connecting with those who are younger, you learn more. When you are amazed by everything around you, enthralled by even the slightest hint of something new on this wonderful planet, you absorb it because you want to. In only a day at the Boston Science Museum, I learned many things about animals, temperatures, the body’sfunctions, and more. In my normal science class, it would take about a year’s worth of classes to go over everything I happened to pick up.
The Boston Science Museum is the perfect place to learn about the “big, bad world” of science that is part of everything we do, regardless of your age. If you become a kid again, you will always learn something new, and the world will once again be filled with magic and wonder.
