RUMFORD – Louis F. E. Cayer, 87, died Tuesday, April 15, at his residence at the Rumford Community Home.

He was born in Rumford, on April 29, 1920, the son of Louis and Laura (Demers) Cayer and graduated from Stephens High School in Rumford, Class of 1937.

He served during World War II with the U.S. Army and retired as a sergeant major from the Maine National Guard after more than 24 years.

He then worked at Boise Cascade Paper Co. in Rumford for more than 35 years, until retirement in 1982, as foreman of the paper machines.

He was a member of the Rumford United Methodist Church and also served as a lay-minister, member and past worshipful master Blazing Star Lodge 30, AF and AM, member Oxford County Shrine Club, life member and ambassador to Kora Temple Shrine, life member, past commander and district chaplain of Robert Shand Post 1641, VFW and also served as District 9 commander of the VFW, member and district chaplain of Napoleon Ouellette Post 24, American Legion, member and past exalted ruler of Rumford Maine Lodge 862, BPOE, member and eight times past patron of Mt. Zircon Chapter 142, OES, member Oakdale Country Club, served one term as selectman for the town of Rumford and had also served on the Rumford Park Commission.

He was married in Rumford on Aug. 2, 1941 to the former Muriel L. Jay, who died in Norway on March 21, 2004.

Survivors include a daughter, Cheryl Anastasio and husband, Frank, of Rumford; a son, Louis J. Cayer II of West Dover, Vt.; a sister, Lorraine Goddard of Prospect, Conn.; eight grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
