LEWISTON – Philip W. Rowe, 91, a resident of Academy Road, Litchfield, died Tuesday, April 15, at Central Maine Medical Center.

He was born Aug. 31, 1916, in East Oxford, the son of Charles W. and Madge L. Turner Rowe. He was one of 16 children, and three are still living. He attended school in New Hampshire and Maine, graduating from Litchfield Academy in 1934.

On Sept. 11, 1937, in Litchfield, he was married to Gertrude E. Small; she passed away Aug. 21, 1972. He worked for many years as a farmer and a carpenter. Two grandsons are following in their grandfather’s footprints, Howard Rowe and Johnathan Hatch; to say the least to name their company “Rowe Construction.”

He was a member of Litchfield Plains Baptist Church, was a deacon, sexton of the Litchfield Plains Cemetery, director of the Litchfield Plains Fair Association for many years, and boys 4-H leader for 35 years.

He enjoyed his family and travel, traveling to Haiti and Israel twice, Germany, Alaska and Hawaii. He went para sailing while spending time in Hawaii. He went on a roller coaster at Busch Gardens in Tampa, Fla.

At the age of 90, he flew in a plane over the Litchfield Plains fair grounds and took the controls to fly the plane. Exercise was a great part of his life, he loved to walk.

He is survived by two sons, Charles Raymond Rowe and his wife, Nora, and Ernest Rowe and his wife, Phyllis, both of Litchfield; five daughters, Mildred Hatch and her husband, Wayne, of Litchfield, Mary Jane Sullivan and her husband, the Rev. Andrew, of Bath, Pauline Chase of Litchfield, the Rev. Esther Irish and her husband, Richard, of Swansea, Mass., and Doris Parlin and her husband, Larry, of Litchfield; two sisters, Ethel Green of Vasssalboro and Eleanor Williams of China; a brother, Arnold Rowe of Waldoboro; 27 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.
