BRUNSWICK – Malcolm L Jewell, 87, of Fisher Road, Bowdoinham, died Tuesday, April 15, at Mid Coast Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.

He was born April 24, 1920, and raised in Massachusetts, and summered at the family farmhouse, Keewaydin, in Bowdoinham. After graduating magna cum laude with both chemistry and physics degrees from Bates College, he enlisted in the military and served in World War II state side as a navy scientist.

After the war, he and his wife Lucille moved into Keewaydin Farm and began raising a family. He worked at the Bates Mill in Lewiston in research and development from 1946 until 1957, and then moved on to become a senior chemist at the S.D. Warren paper mill in Westbrook, where he finished his distinguished career in 1990.

Known for his quick wit and dry folksy manner, he had several interests including farming, “geetar” playing and yodeling. He was also prominently involved in several local organizations and offered his keen accounting services to the UU church in Brunswick, the local chapter of the Masons and the Brunswick Area Student Aid Fund.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Lucille Leonard Jewell; his children, Nina Mendall, Stephen Jewell and Katherine Fiori; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his sister, Elizabeth Jewell Ballard; and his sons, Jeffery Chase Jewell and Jeremy Fisher Jewell.
