FARMINGTON – Maine-Farmington celebrated its home opener Saturday with a 5-2 and 7-0 sweep of a baseball doubleheader against Maine-Presque Isle.

UMPI took the early lead on A.J. Pennartz’s two-run homer in the first inning, but the Beavers (5-10) with runs in each of the first four innings to take the lead. Russ Schmelzer had a pair of hits in both games.

Bill Ridge picked up the win in the opener, while Andrew Dean and Will Griffiths combined on a four-hit shutout in the nightcap.

Colby, Bates split

WATERVILLE – Ryan Heide tossed a seven-hit complete game to lead Bates to a 7-2 victory in the opener of a doubleheader split with Colby. The Mules survived a last-inning rally to prevail, 9-8, in the nightcap.

The Bobcats scored three runs in the ninth inning of the second game before falling short. Robert Patton homered for Bates (6-16).

St. Joe’s, Rivier split

STANDISH – Helped by three errors and five hit-batsmen, Rivier beat St. Joseph’s 10-7 in the opener en route to a doubleheader split. The Monks came back for a 6-0 win in Game 2 behind the pitching of Mason Roberge and Andrew Keirstead.

Ian Lee and Todd Keneborus had home runs for the Monks (21-13.)

Bowdoin swept

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Bowdoin lost early leads of eight and four runs to drop a pair of games to Wesleyan, 17-12 and 6-5.

In the opener, Bowdoin took advantage of five Wesleyan errors to score eight unearned runs, but the hosts belted a pair of three-run home runs. Reid Auger and Brendan Garner each had a two-hit game for the Polar Bears, while Kevon Zikaras added a home run.

USM sweeps Plymouth St.

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Southern Maine pounded out 32 hits in a 20-5 and 11-2 doubleheader sweep of Plymouth State.

Ryan Pike had four hits in the opener, including a pair of home runs. Ryan Gaffney and Jordan Berthiaume also homered for the Huskies (19-8). Andrew Stacy and Josh Mackey also had four hits in Game 1. Mike Eaton led the offense in the nightcap with three hits and three RBIs.

Softball

Brandeis sweeps Bates

WALTHAM, Mass. – Brandies pitchers limited Bates to four hits in each game to post a 3-2 and 4-1 sweep of a doubleheader.

Stacia Saniuk hits a two-run home run for Bates in the opener for the 16th blast of her career. In Game 2, the Bobcats’ lone run came in the final inning when Liz Stahler culminated a string of three consecutive singles for the RBI.

E. Conn. sweeps USM

GORHAM – Rachel Denny slugged a pair of home runs, including a grand slam, to lead Eastern Connecticut State University to a 6-1, 11-8 sweep of Southern Maine.

Sabrina Sevigny averted the shutout in the opener with her home run in the seventh inning. Sevigny added a pair of doubles in the second game for USM (12-14).

UMF sweeps Bay Path

LONGMEADOW, Mass. – Kasey McPhail went 6 of 7 in a doubleheader to lead Maine-Farmington to a 4-3, 12-1 sweep of Bay Path.

Sarah Defillip and Liz Bergeron earned the pitching victories for UMF (10-2).

Men’s lacrosse

Tufts 16, Bates 10

LEWISTON – D.J. Hessler, Matt Caple and Clem McNally all scored four goals to lead Tufts to a 16-10 triumph over Bates.

David Barrett had tied the game for Bates at 5-5 in the second period, but Tufts (8-4) scored the next five goals to take command.

Bryan Frates led the Bobcats (3-8) with three goals and three assists, while Brent Morin added three goals.

Women’s lacrosse

Tufts 13, Bates 12

MEDFORD, Mass. – Tufts rallied from a three-goal deficit in the second half to extend its win streak to six with a 13-12 victory over Bates.

Briana Gross, Molly Wagner and Molly Dilworth scored three goals apiece for Bates (6-6).
