BUCKFIELD – Consultant Susan Goulet presented a plan to the Committee on Economic Development on Thursday night to lure more businesses to this town of 1,700 people.

One way she’s doing that is partnering with a Realtor to show properties and create a mailing to the top 500 companies in Maine.

With $5,000 approved by voters last year, Goulet reported some of the money has been spent to:

• print and deliver 1,200 brochures to Oxford County county growth councils and the York County visitor center and the Maine Welcome Center;

• create signs for Route 117 at the town lines;

• create a community calendar on the town Web site that lists activities for churches, Odd Fellows Theater, schools, lodges and other organizations. Town Manager Glen Holmes said the site is receiving 3,500 hits a month because people want to know more about the town.

Goulet has applied for two grants. One for $7,500 would pair high school students with businesses to learn skills for future careers. The other is a matching grant for businesses to improve their buildings with paint, repairs and better entrances.
