CONCORD, N.H. (AP) – Another round of heated debate is expected Monday when lawmakers consider new speed limits for New Hampshire’s largest lake.
A bill calling for 45 mph daytime and 25 mph nighttime speed limits on Lake Winnipesaukee passed in the House in January, but similar bills in past years have been shot down in the Senate. The current version would impose speed limits for two years and focuses only on the largest lake.
Supporters argue high speed boating is compromising safety and quality of life, but opponents say the bill isn’t needed and that it could hurt tourism.
The Senate’s transportation committee is holding a hearing on the bill Monday.
