SAN CARLOS, Calif. – Paul Ehrenfried, 87, of San Carlos, Calif., a native of Lewiston, died Friday, April 18.

He was born in Lewiston on July 16, 1920, the son of Jacob B. and Mildred Dawber Ehrenfried. He attended Lewiston schools, graduating from Lewiston High School in 1938, and from the University of Maine in 1942.

An avid musician and drummer, he was an early member of the Maine Bears jazz band. Commissioned an officer in the U.S. Navy, he served aboard a Bath-built destroyer, the USS Caperton, in the Pacific theater during World War II. As part of Task Force 58, his ship engaged in major sea battles against the Japanese. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart medal.

In 1948, he received a master’s degree in business administration from Columbia University, New York, and in the same year married the former Gloria Fowler. He was employed by The Emporium, a landmark department store in San Francisco and held a number of executive positions. He later was engaged in the real estate business, until his retirement.

He is survived by his widow of San Carlos; two sons, David F. and his wife, Beatriz, of San Jose, Calif., and Stephen of San Carlos, Calif.; two brothers, Albert of Acton, Mass., and David and his wife, Evelyn, of Lewiston; a grandson, Ian of San Jose; and several nieces and nephews.
