LEWISTON – Police on both sides of the Androscoggin River were investigating reports of seemingly unrelated robberies each committed with a BB gun Tuesday night.

In Lewiston about 9:30 p.m., a man went into the Lewiston Police Department and said he had been robbed by a group of a dozen or so people.

That man told investigators he was approached in the downtown area by a gang of people wearing hooded sweatshirts and bandannas over their faces.

Early reports were that at least one of the suspects displayed a gun he carried in the waistband of his pants. The man who reported the heist said the suspects reached into his pocket and took a little more than $2 in change.

Police from both Lewiston and Auburn went to Bonney Park on the Auburn side of the footbridge to question potential witnesses about the incident.

At the Lewiston Police Department, the man who said he had been robbed was being interviewed late Tuesday night.

His report came roughly two hours after another person reported his bicycle had been stolen near the park in Auburn by a suspect carrying what looked like a pellet gun.

Police late Tuesday said it was too soon to say whether there was any connection between the two incidents.

“We’re in the process of working it out right now,” said Lewiston police Cpl. Tim Darnell about 10:30 p.m.

The investigation was expected to continue into Wednesday morning.
