Come to L-A, it’s happening here! That is, unless you’re seeking employment at Bates College. In that case avoid L-A at all costs.

During the April 7 Auburn City Council meeting, dealing with the school budget, the citizens of L-A were afforded a rare peek into the elitist culture dominating Bates College. Angered by the proposed budget cuts, Auburn resident David Chirayath blasted the council, stating that he and his wife had been advised by a majority of the Bates College faculty and staff not to move to L-A because of the failing schools and lack of programs.

This raises three questions: First, if our schools are so bad, why does Bates continue to send student teachers to them?

Second, how do they reconcile keeping their own children from attending L-A public schools while standing silently by as their cause celebre, the immigrant populace, attends what they perceive as substandard schools? Is this the same Bates College that portrays itself as the self-annointed social conscience of this community, continually pointing a jaded finger at those of opposite beliefs?

Finally, why did the Sun Journal reporter fail to attribute those remarks to Bates College personnel? Don’t the people of L-A merit full disclosure?
