FARMINGTON – The gazebo in Meetinghouse Park on Main Street is undergoing foundation work this week just in time for summer concerts.

Eight support posts are being replaced, Stephen Shible, director of the town’s Parks and Recreation Department, said Thursday. New plywood and lattice work will then be added around the lower portion of the gazebo and painted, he said.

After years of much use, the outside posts had started to decay, leaving a rounded mound in the middle of the gazebo floor, he said. Last summer, Greg Roux from Farmington Construction checked the gazebo and recommended replacing the posts and putting them on round disks of cement to level the structure and flatten the floor, he said.

Early Thursday morning Dan Pierce and Justin Adams from Farmington Construction were digging out large pieces of cement that had been poured into holes for the posts to sit on. They then set the round cement disks in place and replaced the beams.

Earlier this month, selectmen approved a bid of $4,598.10 for Farmington Construction to complete the work, Shible said. The capital improvement project will be funded from the Parks and Recreation budget, he said.

The gazebo gets alot of use and will be ready for Old Crow Band concerts as well as other musical groups that use the gazebo in the summer, he said.
