BEVERLEY, Mass. – The University of Southern Maine rallied to score eight runs in the final two innings of play to post an 8-6 victory over Endicott in collegiate baseball action Thursday.

The Gulls got started with a quick run in the home half of the first, as senior Dan Gomez grounded out to second which allowed Aaron Santos to score from third for the 1-0 lead. The Gulls would tack on five more runs in the second inning, including a two-run home run by freshman Luis Uribe to give Endicott a 6-0 lead.

The Huskies (22-9) were able to get a run back in the top of the third when Ryan Pike cranked a solo shot to make the score 6-1. Starter Erik Field was able to get himself out of the inning with no further damage. Southern Maine broke out in the top of the eighth when Pike reached on an error to begin the frame. Following three straight walks, Anthony D’Alfonso hit an absolute bomb to center field.

Freshman right-hander Nick Hahn gave the Huskies a brilliant relief outing, hurling 6.2 innings of five-hit shutout ball. Junior Tim Therrian came on to get the final out and record his second save of the season.

Softball
UMF splits

CASTLETON, Vt. – Megan Goodrow’s impressive performance at the plate allowed the University of Maine at Farmington to split a doubleheader with Castleton State in softball action Thursday.

The Beavers (16-6) won the opener 13-3, shortened to five innings by the mercy rule. Castleton found redemption in the nightcap by claiming a narrow 7-6 victory.

Goodrow went 3-for-3 at the plate with a walk and two home runs to lead UMF in the opener. She smacked a three-run homer in the third and a two-run rip in the fourth as the Beavers plated four runs in each of the final three innings.

In the nightcap, Castelton plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to post the win.

The Spartans held a 5-4 advantage heading into the seventh, but a lead-off home run by McKell Barnes tied the score at 5-5. Goodrow followed with a double to left-center, and after being sacrificed to third, scored on Casey McPhail’s RBI-groundout to take the one-run lead.

Hillary Bemis sparked the seventh-inning rally with a one-out triple to center field. Allison Lemay followed with an RBI single to tie the game at 6-6. Alicia Zrauning singled to right, and after an error put runners at second and third with one out, Sarah Flore hit an RBI-groundout to seal the win.

Colby 6, Bowdoin 2

WATERVILLE – Annie Wilson ripped a base-clearing triple in the second inning to lift Colby to a 6-2 victory over Bowdoin in softball action. Alyssa Crowell pitched a three-hit complete game, struck out two and walked one while posting her fourth victory of the season.

Lewiston native Allison Coleman and Clare Ronan scored Bowdoin’s runs in the top of the second for a 2-0 lead. Christine Gillespie had an RBI single to drive in Tory Starr, cutting the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the frame. Wilson, who had two of Colby’s six hits, belted her big hit to plate Molly Puskar, Lizzi Fort and Gillespie.

The Mules (9-12) loaded the bases in the fourth inning and got one run from Fort after Carlie Minichino was hit by a pitch.

USM splits

GORHAM – Sabrina Mills singled home the game-winning run in the 10th inning to lift the University of Southern Maine earned a 7-6 victory over Bridgewater State in the first game of a non-conference softball doubleheader Thursday.

Mills’ single plated Bryant Pond native Tiffany Jordan, who had reached base on a fielder’s choice before stealing second to put herself in position to score. Trailing 4-1 after five innings, Bridgewater rallied to take a 5-4 lead in the top of the sixth, scoring four runs on three hits, a pair of walks and a USM error. All four of the Bears’ runs came after two outs.

In the nightcap, Meghan Noyes and Lindsey Allison each had RBI singles as the Bears claimed a 3-2 win. Trailing 1-0 after one inning, Allison and Kate Youngstrom put their team ahead in the top of the second inning. Allison singled to right field to plate the Bears’ first run of the contest, while Youngstrom’s bases-loaded ground-out gave her team the go-ahead run.

Noyes’ RBI single in the top of the fifth was the game-winner, as the Huskies (16-16) battled back for a run in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single from Kristina Grondin. Grondin gave up three earned runs on four hits and two walks in the loss.
