LYNDON CENTER, N.Y. – Lyndon State put up 19 runs and pounded out 28 hits as the Hornets took a pair, 7-5 and 12-6, from the University of Maine at Farmington in baseball action Friday.
In the opener, Jason Ryan went 3-for-3 to lead the Hornets (11-10) to a come-from behind win. Kyle Shea, Andrew Dean and Mike Cummons had two hits each for the Beavers (5-18).
In the nightcap, the Hornets plated nine runs in the bottom of the first on 10 hits and coasted to victory. Matthew Picard earned both mound wins for Lyndon State.
Phineas Peake hammered out four hits, and catcher Tyler Hanson collected two for the Beavers in the second game.
Bowdoin 6, Bates 2
BRUNSWICK – Joe Berte launched a ball over the right field wall for a third inning grand slam and eventual 6-2 Bowdoin victory over Bates in baseball action Friday.
The Bobcats (8-18) plated a pair of runs in the third with two outs. Brian Mahoney rolled an RBI base hit up the middle that scored Denis Hogan, and Erik Hood knocked home Mahoney later in the frame for a 2-0 lead.
St. Joseph’s 7, Suffolk 1
QUINCY, Mass. – Starting pitcher sophomore Andrew Kierstead tossed a complete game and the Monks surged for seven runs in the seventh to earn a convincing 7-1 victory over Suffolk University in the quarterfinal round of the GNAC playoffs.
Wade Oliver went 2-for-5 with a run and two RBIs for the Monks (23-13), while first-year Todd Keneboris went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI and Brian Schools was 2-for-5.
The Rams (23-9) scored their only run of the game in the bottom of the sixth when Anthony Iacopucci singled home Tim Corcoran.
Softball
Tufts blank Bates
LEWISTON – Tufts University needed only five innings to secure an 8-0 victory over Bates in NESCAC softball action Friday.
The Jumbos (23-8) jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning. Junior Cara Hovhanessian singled in two runs in the first and collected another two hits and two RBIs before it was over.
Senior center fielder Alex Bethel and sophomore second baseman Liz Stahler had the Bobcats’ (6-19) only two hits of the game.
Bowdoin, Colby split
BRUNSWICK – Carlie Minichino hammered a home run to deep center in extra innings of Game 2 as Colby split a double header, 3-4 and 5-4.
A bases loaded wild pitch in the bottom of the sixth inning of Game 2 by relief pitcher Minichino allowed two runs to cross the plate, thereby tying the game at four-all.
But, Minichino notched the mound win for the Mules (10-13) with a round tripper in the eighth.
Colby took a brief 3-2 lead in Game 1 by scoring three times in the fourth inning. But, the Polar Bears (23-11) rallied to score a pair of unearned runs in the fifth to take the lead for good, tying the game on a Courtney LaPierre RBI single and going ahead on a Colby throwing error.
