LISBON – Firefighters were kept busy Friday afternoon with blazes at a garage on Frost Hill Avenue, in grass near Littlefield Road and in woods off Birch Street.
Loss was set at $50,000 in the garage fire at the residence of Randy Thayer, Fire Chief P. Sean Galipeau said. The detached garage, which was insured, was about 100 feet from his home and an attached garage.
Galipeau said the fire started in an overhead storage area, apparently from a drop light accidentally left behind when Thayer went up to look for something. It ignited hay and other materials.
Smoke and flames were showing when firefighters arrived, and quickly burned through the roof of the 50- by 30-foot wooden building. Most of the contents were saved, including a motorcycle, snowmobile, lawn mowers and other items.
“Everything with wheels was out,” Galipeau said.
The fire was reported about 3 p.m. and was under control within a half-hour. Firefighters cleared the scene at 6 p.m. Responding to the scene in addition to Lisbon and Lisbon Falls Fire Companies was Topsham Fire Department’s rapid intervention team. Lewiston Fire Department filled in at the Lisbon station.
The grass fire was out when firefighters arrived.
Durham Fire Department filled in at Lisbon Falls and was dispatched to the Birch Street fire along with one Lisbon truck. About one-quarter acre of woods burned.
