WEST PARIS – Selectmen authorized fire Chief Norman St. Pierre to order a new firetruck from Southern Fire Equipment of Jasper, Ga., on Thursday.

St. Pierre told the board that with delivery, the truck will cost $208,300, which will come out of the department’s capital equipment reserve account. Another $10,852 to equip the truck will come from the department’s budget.

“By paying for the truck in this way we will not be exhausting the equipment account and still have a truck that is ready to join the fleet at time of delivery,” Town Manager John White said.

St. Pierre said the truck will arrive in July.

“This is earlier than we had expected but they tell us at Jasper Equipment that they are not very busy right now. People just don’t have the money to buy firetrucks, they say, so our new unit can be outfitted much sooner than usual,” he said.

The truck will be a 2008 Freightliner equipped with a 2,000-gallon tank and safety package. It can be connected with engine five for a total water capacity of 3,500 gallons for use until mutual aid arrives.
