BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) – A fire of suspicious origin destroyed a 130-year-old barn at the Intervale Center, and a suspect was arrested Monday, authorities said
Police responding to a burglar alarm early Sunday found a broken window at the Intervale Center’s Office, and while they were investigating it, a fire broke out in a barn behind the main building, according to Assistant Fire Marshal Thomas Middleton.
Firefighters raced to prevent the fire from spreading, but flying embers started a fire in the woods nearby. Both were extinguished. Damage was estimated at more than $100,000.
On Monday, police arrested Edward T. Westley, 33, of Massachusetts, and charged him with setting the fire. Westley had left his vehicle at the scene, which helped police find him.
