I sometimes question myself: Did I do the right thing? I think I did.

As for the administration of the University of Maine at Farmington, they should ask themselves the same question.

I have received phone calls, e-mails and letters from all over this country, the United States, home of the free and home of the brave, thanking me.

I only did what any other veteran would do.

As for the UMF student project, well-meaning people always seem to forget the law of unintended consequences, and in their vanity and arrogant self-righteousness never bother to think through what they’re trying to do, versus what they may accomplish.

Please remember – the flag is not just a symbol to veterans who defended our rights to stay free, it is the only flag of the United States.

Just like other veterans, I went into the Army, trained and fought with the ideal and willingness to protect and defend the rights of all Americans, not only those who agree with me. Veterans are obligated to take a stand on issues affecting not only veterans, but all Americans, when our country’s flag is being disrespected.

I will defend it, even if I have to go to jail for it.

To stop the disrespect of the flag, federal officials should be urged to adopt the a constitutional amendment on flag desecration. Let the people decide, through the process of ratification, the fate of their flag.

Charles Bennett, Farmington
