OGUNQUIT (AP) – A limo driver and a teenage boy were killed when their car was struck by a sport utility vehicle headed in the wrong direction on the Maine Turnpike, a crash that raised the day’s statewide traffic death toll to five, state police said Tuesday.

James McLaughlin, 65, of Gorham, and Cooper Campbell, 15, of Scarborough, died instantly when the vehicles collided at about 11 p.m. Monday. The boy’s father, Steven Campbell, 48, was taken to Maine Medical Center for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

McLaughlin was behind the wheel of a Lincoln Town Car owned by Maine Limousine Services of Portland and had picked up Campbell and his son at Logan Airport in Boston for their trip home.

The driver of the SUV, Donna Bartlett, 38, of Wells, was treated at the Portland hospital for a broken ankle.

State police had received several calls about a vehicle headed south in the northbound lanes. Trooper Philip Alexander caught up with the SUV in the opposite lane and was using his emergency lights and siren to try to catch the driver’s attention when the crash occurred.

With no way to intervene, Alexander could only watch as the limo and the Chevrolet Tahoe collided in the center lane at Mile 14.

It was not immediately clear where Bartlett had begun her wrong-way ride. The nearest entrance to the north is at Mile 19 in Wells, but officials noted that she could have crossed the median to change direction.

Police were investigating whether alcohol was a factor.

The York County district attorney will be consulted prior to any decision on possible charges against Bartlett, said Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the state Public Safety Department.

The northbound lanes between York and Wells were closed for 41/2 hours during the overnight period as debris was removed and troopers continued their investigation.

Three other deaths occurred earlier Monday in separate accidents across southern Maine.

Christopher Ball, 40, of Raymond was killed when his speeding car left Route 85 in Raymond and struck a tree, state police said.

Juanita Clough, 55, of Brunswick was fatally injured Monday night when her SUV hit a tree off the Old Bath Road in Brunswick, according to police.

A bicyclist lost her life in Sanford when she apparently collided with a logging truck at a busy intersection on Route 202, police said. The victim was identified as Susan Coy, 43, of Sanford.
