FARMINGTON – Pitcher Sarah Defilipp scattered seven hits in a 5-2 complete-game win as the University of Maine at Farmington toppled Elms College to advance to the semifinals in the NAC tournament.
Lauren Overlock singled twice, doubled, scored two runs and drove in another to lead the Beavers (22-7). Megan Goodrow recorded a pair of sacrifice flys for two RBIs, and Kasey McPhail slugged a single and a double with an RBI for Farmington.
Christina Giampetruzzi clubbed a solo home run for the Blazers (19-15).
Baseball
Colby 15, Bates 8
LEWISTON – Senior Colin Riggs went 4-for-6 with four RBIs and two runs as Colby overcame a four-run, third-inning deficit to run away with a 15-8 triumph over Bates College in baseball action Wednesday.
First-year third baseman Jake Simon drove the first pitch of the second inning over the right-field fence for an opposite-field home run for the Bobcats (10-20) to start a four-run rally.
The Mules (17-13) got to first-year starter Ryan Heide with a series of difficult to handle hits, and Richard Newton’s two-run double in a seven-hit, course-changing third inning that resulted in eight runs.
USM 6, St. Joe’s 4
STANDISH – University of Southern Maine (26-10) outfielder Anthony D’Alphonso hit a three-run home run in the third inning to give the Huskies a 6-4 victory over St. Joe’s on Wednesday evening.
Brian Schools and Ben Grant-Roy both notched three hits in the loss for St. Joseph’s (25-14).
With his sac bunt in the first inning, Schools registered his 41st career sacrifice hit, which breaks the NCAA Division III record. USM starting pitcher Adam Ross struck out nine and allowed two earned runs in seven innings to improve to 4-3 on the season.
