WINTHROP – Mary N. (Nan) Nolan, 72, passed away on Tuesday, April 22, at Winthrop Manor. Over the course of her adult life, she had been treated for several forms of cancer and had recently been diagnosed with lung cancer. Her recent course of treatment was difficult on her body so, with the continual support of her family and friends surrounding her, she passed.

She was born the daughter of the late Henrietta Loring Gray and the late Harold Sonia on Nov. 23, 1935 in Weymouth. She attended elementary school in Bath, attended a few years of parochial school at St. Joseph’s then returned to public school for her high school years and graduated from Gardiner High School in 1954. She attended Fisher College in Boston, and graduated in 1956.

She worked in the Boston area after graduation in the clerical field and told countless stories about Red Sox fans and other patrons while she was secretary at the Mangar Hotel. She later met and married Gerry Nolan and they lived in Connecticut.

When their marriage dissolved, she returned to Maine and continued working in the field she loved. She was hired at Central Maine Power Co. in 1965, and shortly thereafter worked as secretary/administrative assistant to Normand Temple, V.P. of public and government affairs. When Norm Temple retired, she worked briefly for David Flanagan. In 1988, she transferred to Maine Yankee. She worked at Maine Yankee in public and government affairs, then personnel, until her retirement in 1996.

She loved history, government, antiques, politics and of course, cats. She also studied Russian and the customs of the Middle East.

She is survived by a nephew, David Kearns and wife, Katie, of South Portland; cousins David Mackenzie and wife, Pat, of California, Robert (Bob) Mackenzie and wife, Helen, of Washington, D.C., and Jacquelyn Murphy and husband, Tom, of Florida; she has various cousins within Maine and Massachusetts; and a very large extended family of friends who loved her and will miss her.

She was predeceased by her mother, Henrietta Loring Gray in 1988; and later her father, Harold Sonia.

The family would like to extend a special “thank you” to HealthReach Hospice and volunteers of Gardiner for their excellent care and attention to Mary while she was a patient.
