MEXICO – Getting people to run for a seat on the Board of Selectmen is easier than finding someone to represent the town on the school board.

Two former school board members decided to run for selectmen this year, leaving open one three-year term. No one took out papers for the SAD 43 board seat, so it’s up to selectmen to appoint someone, Town Clerk Patty Duguay said last week in the town office.

Regarding the Board of Selectmen, it’s a four-way race for two three-year seats. Incumbents Peter Merrill and Barbara Laramee are seeking re-election. Elizabeth Jorgensen and Randal Camwell oppose them.

Jorgensen decided not to seek re-election to the SAD 43 board seat, which she filled for the remaining year’s term of Camwell, who resigned after two years, Duguay said.

Due to the town’s switch to a referendum from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on June 10, balloting for municipal offices will take place then. There will be no formal town meeting this year.

There will, however, be a special town meeting at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 21, in the Calvin T. Lyons Town Hall at the town office. That’s when the town will vote by a show of hands on whether or not to renew Med-Care Ambulance Service’s third straight, 10-year extension to the 1988 interlocal agreement.

A public hearing on the annual municipal budget review will follow adjournment of that meeting.

In other business, selectmen last week scheduled May 12 to 23 as spring cleanup.

That means everyone with trash and debris to be picked up should have the materials at curbside prior to May 12. Road Commissioner David Errington said there will be no return runs.

People can stop by the town office for a copy of the 15 restrictions, such as no garbage or automobiles, propane tanks, auto gasoline tanks, or batteries.

People are also encouraged to take their items to the transfer station during spring cleanup week, if possible.
