FARMINGTON – Alma Fern Bean Abbott, 96, of Farmington died peacefully Monday, April 28, at the Pierce House.

She was born on Aug. 30, 1911, in Lewiston, the daughter of Amos Leonard and Ada Fern (Johnson) Bean. She graduated from Haverhill High School in 1929.

In 1934, she married Glyndon “Ace” Sawin, a local pharmacist. In the early years of their marriage, she had a dress shop in Wilton. In 1963, she graduated from the University of Maine and later taught English to seventh and eighth graders in Jay and Farmington.

After Ace’s death, she married Harland C. Abbott. They traveled, skied and played golf together. With her sister Ginny and many friends, she was an avid Scrabble and bridge player. Her stenciled tole work is treasured by her family.

She is survived by a daughter, Joanne; granddaughter, Allison Regina; great-granddaughters, Alexis Mae and Audrey Rose; and nieces and nephews.
