SOUTH PARIS – The SAT is a Maine high school junior’s scholastic rite of passage – a measure of what they’ve learned, what they have the potential to learn, and a key tool in the college recruiting process.
The SAT is also, apparently, a catalyst for scoring goals on the lacrosse field.
Oxford Hills junior Lauren Brett spent Saturday morning crunching numbers and filling in printed ovals completely with a No. 2 pencil. She spent the afternoon running all over the Edward Little defense.
Brett scored six times to lead the Vikings to a 15-8 win over the visiting Eddies at the Gouin complex in a frigid, soggy Saturday matinee.
“That’s the definition of a student-athlete right there,” Oxford Hills coach McKayla Bell said. “She always comes out ready to play, and to this after something like that is impressive.”
Rachel and Hannah Strauss and Brooke Mason each had two goals and an assist, while Heather Knights added another pair of scores for Oxford Hills.
Edward Little was hurried from the beginning. Because of the morning testing conducted simultaneously statewide, the Eddies’ bus was late in arriving. The game was pushed back 20 minutes, and Edward Little’s players hurried to warm up.
It took all of nine seconds for them to realize they could have used another 20 minutes, as Brett fired her first past EL keeper Liz Barclay with with 24:51 remaining in the 25-minute first half.
“We had some problems marking up,” EL coach Jim Platz said. “We have a young team. It’s pretty basic, but we’re still learning.”
“Winning the draws was big for us,” Bell said. “We won a couple early and got a couple of quick goals to get us going.”
Despite her early troubles, Barclay was solid for the Eddies despite the loss, stopping 22 shots.
“She had an excellent game,” “Platz said. “She kept the score down, for sure.”
The Vikings continued to apply the early pressure and shot out to a 6-0 lead in the first 15:58 by taking advantage of Edward Little’s man-to-man defense.
“It was a lot easier to beat than if they were playing zone,” Brett said. “It was wide open if you beat the person guarding you.”
On the other end, Oxford Hills’ defense played its own man-to-man defense, and held the Eddies off the board until the 19:08 mark of the first half. That’s when Kirsten Prue netted her first of three on the afternoon. Prue also had an assist, and Karen Leary also chipped in for EL with three goals and an assist. Katie Williamson had the Eddies’ other two goals.
“We didn’t get as many opportunities to run a set offense as we would have liked,” Platz said. “But we had some good playing out there at times.”
Early in the second half, EL threatened, and pulled to within three at 6-3.
The Vikings pulled away, though, snapping back into their rhythm to bolt out to a 15-6 lead. Leary popped in a pair for the Eddies as time wound down to finish the scoring.
