TOGUS – Robert Mathes Cantrell, 83, of North Jay, died Friday afternoon at the Togus VA Medical Center.

He was born in Darien, Conn., on Jan. 12, 1925, a son of Kenneth and Elizabeth (Hoffman) Cantrell Sr. He received his education in Darien schools before entering the U.S. Navy in which he served during World War II.

After his discharge from the Navy, he married Violet Speer on Oct. 28, 1946. She died in 1978.

Mr. Cantrell worked as an oil service technician and enjoyed playing poker and going bird hunting with his son.

He was a member of the Frank L. Mitchell VFW Post No. 3335 of Jay.

He is survived by his son, Jim Cantrell and his wife, Sue, of Temple; a daughter, Patricia Garbarini and her husband, Steve, of Peru; siblings, Barbara Tarantino of Naugatuck, Conn., Kenneth Cantrell and his wife, Rose, of East Haven, Conn., Bruce Cantrell and his wife, Yvette, of Manchester, Conn., Virginia Campbell and her husband, Donald, of Danbury, Conn., Elaine Vittum and her husband, Robert “Bob,” of Dade City, Fla., and Holden, Maine, Avor Hohenshilt of Kalispell, Mont., and Vern Campbell of West Redding, Conn.; grandchildren, Ami Frederick of Auburn, James Cantrell and his wife, Riley, of Gardiner, and Melissa Stinchcomb and her husband, Scott, of North Chesterville, and his daughter Patricia’s children; and three great-grandchildren, Alex, Jacob and Scotty.

He was predeceased by two sons, Robbie Jr. in 1951, and Scott in 1979; and a sister, Dorothy Wasilko.
