Dear Sun Spots: A few years ago a bread outlet that sold Arnold Bread moved from the Center Street, Auburn, area to Lewiston. Can you identify the new location, the outlet name and store hours please? Thank you – No Name, No Town.

Answer:
The Freihofer Bakery Outlet is at 24 Landry Road in Lewiston, off Main Street, behind Mechanics Savings Bank and Irving Blue Canoe. They are open seven days a week and sell Thomas, Arnold, Entenmann, Boboli, and Lenders products. Products are up to 75 percent off retail prices. Hours are Sunday 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. There are daily specials and they also offer a shopper card: get a stamp for every $5 you spend and when it’s full, redeem it for $5 off a purchase.

Dear Sun Spots: In Martha Stewart’s Living magazine (February 2008) on page 68, “powdered oxygen bleach” is mentioned. Do you know of a brand for this product and where it can be purchased? Thanks. – No Name, No Town.

Answer:
Powdered oxygen bleach is a gentler alternative to chlorine bleach. It is color safe and won’t bleach dyed fabrics. It uses nontoxic ingredients like hydrogen peroxide, which release oxygen for cleaning, to preserve whiteness. It can be used on most clothing, carpet, upholstery.

According to oxygenbleach.homestead.com/files/, there are many advantages to using powdered oxygen bleaches. They brighten fabrics with regular use, act as a disinfectant on both bacteria and viruses in the home, can be mixed or used with other household cleaners and are non-toxic to animals, plants and humans. They are also very environmentally friendly since they break down into natural soda ash or borax after the oxygen is released.

They may take longer to work than chlorine bleaches since they are designed to maintain whites and brights with regular use.

You will be able to find this product at retailers who carry chlorine bleach and other laundry or cleaning products. Some brands are OxiClean, Cheer Ultra Laundry Detergent with Bleach, Tide Ultra 2 with Bleach, BIZ Nonchlorine Bleach. Look for oxygen bleach products in liquid form as well.

For the reader looking for books by Thornton W. Burgess: There are loads of his children’s books on eBay. I have a standing search for anything Burgess and I get six to eight of his books of all titles everyday. – Marilyn, Leeds.

Dear Sun Spots: Each year volunteers in the Lewiston-Auburn area work to make the American Cancer Society’s Daffodil Days a great success! On behalf of the American Cancer Society I would like to thank the many local individuals, businesses, and organizations for their eagerness to help. In particular, thanks go to the many volunteers who wrapped, delivered and sold flowers in the community.

More than $21,000 was raised in Androscoggin County to improve the quality of life for cancer patients and their families right here in our community. Once again, Hannaford stores generously supported the campaign by selling bouquets of daffodils and donating all of the proceeds to the American Cancer Society.

Daffodil Days, like most of the society’s fundraising campaigns, is volunteer-driven. During Daffodil Days volunteers prepared, delivered and purchased bouquets. Every volunteer was dedicated to helping support the American Cancer Society’s vital research, education, advocacy, and patient programs and services. Thanks again to everyone! I hope to see you during Daffodil Days 2009! – Marie Roberge, Community Executive, American Cancer Society.
