FARMINGTON – A Jay man pleaded guilty to two counts of misdemeanor assault, one of them on a police officer, and two other charges Monday. He was sentenced to seven days in jail on each of the assault charges, the sentences to run concurrently.
Gary L. Choate Jr., 21, faced numerous charges stemming from a late December incident on Jewell Street in Jay, including two other assault charges that were dismissed in a plea agreement with state prosecutors.
Choate also pleaded guilty Monday to operating a vehicle without a license and failure to register a vehicle.
According to Jay police in January, Choate became confrontational with Sgt. Troy Young while he was investigating a report of an assault at a residence and demanded the officer leave. Choate then assaulted Young and attempted to eject him from the home, Jay Police Chief Larry White Sr. said at the time.
Young placed Choate under arrest as the confrontation continued, White had said, and Young and Choate fell to the floor, slipping in beer and broken glass that was on the floor from fighting prior to Young’s arrival.
Officer Russell Adams and Livermore Falls officer Brock Caton arrived to assist Young in taking Choate into custody.
Caton ended up placing a Taser gun without its probe cartridge on Choate’s arm to dry-stun him, White said.
In addition to the seven days in jail, Choate was ordered to pay a $300 fine on each of the assault charges and $100 each for operating a vehicle without a license and failure to register a vehicle.
Choate requested that he serve the seven days over three weekends to allow him to continue working.
