AUBURN – Learning to play boys’ lacrosse is a work in progress for a majority of Maine’s young programs. Learning how to close the deal in the fourth quarter is an even tougher skill to master.
Edward Little High School absorbed that lesson the hard way Tuesday afternoon.
EL never trailed until the final goal of the afternoon. It came off the stick of Cony’s Tom Morrison – his fourth of the day – and rocketed the Rams to an 8-7 victory at Central Maine Community College.
Morrison and Justin Genest scored earlier in the fourth period for Cony (3-1), which rallied from a 7-5 deficit in the final 7 minutes, 35 seconds. Morrison’s game-winner came with 2:07 remaining.
“I think the other team was a little better conditioned than we were. They just stuck it out in the fourth quarter, and we folded a little bit,” said EL coach Andy MacIsaac.
“We were up two. All we had to do was keep playing good lacrosse for a while, and we were too tired to do it.”
Zach Bennett and Tim Brodsky christened the final stanza with back-to-back goals, giving EL (1-3) a two-goal advantage for the third time.
Thirty-one seconds after the Brodsky strike, Cony took advantage of a turnover after a conduct foul against the Eddies’ bench to cut the lead in half. Morrison cashed in courtesy of Joey Gagnon. Genest grabbed the equalizer at 5:10.
Cony hinted at its late outburst in the third quarter, when the Rams rifled a dozen shots to the Eddies’ five. Morrison and Genest both scored to wipe out a 4-3 halftime disparity.
“There’s no quit in this team,” said Cony coach Andy Haskell. “Our senior group, this is our third win this year, and the last three years they’ve had just three wins each year. We’ve definitely turned the corner.” Matt Nyholm paced EL with three goals and two assists. Bennett and Brodsky added two tallies apiece, with Brodsky, Isaiah Rembert, Tom Lynch and Aaron Gould contributing assists. Derek Racine made 16 saves for the Eddies.
