MONMOUTH – It’s a lineup full of potent bats, but the Georges Valley roster was full of patient bats Tuesday.
In a battle of two previously unbeaten teams, the Bucs only had three hits off Monmouth pitching, but the defending Class C state champs found plenty of other ways to score in a convincing 12-0 win over the Mustangs.
The Bucs (4-0) took advantage of Monmouth’s shorthanded pitching and utilized 14 walks and two Mustang errors to break open a 4-0 lead after four innings.
“Being good hitters, they’re aggressive, but they’re aggressive within the strike zone,” said Georges Valley coach Rusty Worcester. “We’ve worked hard over the years to attack the ball, but it’s going to have to be a strike. They really did well with that today.”
Monmouth’s top pitcher, Brittany Hilton, missed her second straight start with an injury. Jill Armstrong, who had her first start since her freshman year Monday, pitched the first four innings before an injury. Freshman Kristie Hilton came on in relief and finished the game.
“It would have been nice to see what it would have been like if both teams were at full strength,” said Monmouth coach Rachel Bernier. “They’re a quality team, but I think we’re a quality team too.”
The Bucs’ Danielle Frye silenced Monmouth’s bats. The sophomore pitched a no-hitter and only allowed one baserunner. Moe Beaulieu walked in the fifth. She finished with nine strikeouts.
“This is her second no-hitter of the year,” said Worcester. “The ball has been exploding out of her hands the last couple of days.”
The Bucs got two runs in the third when a Brittany Worcester bunt scored a run and Jessica Keating followed with a run on a wild pitch. In the next inning, Keating’s single up the middle plated two for a 4-0 lead.
Armstrong’s knee swelled up, and she was taken out after four innings. Hilton came in and produced a gutsy effort on short notice. The Bucs scored four runs in the fifth on five walks and a hit batter. They added four more in the sixth on four walks and an Ashley Geel RBI single.
