I exchange a nervous look with my friend Lucy, as we hear the high school counselor pile all this information on us, telling us things like, I recommend a study hall, or, all freshmen have to take physical science. Oh, gosh, I’m thinking. This is just too overwhelming.
So it is finally time for eighth graders to start thinking about the transition to high school! That moment we’ve been waiting for, but are secretly dreading. Horror stories are passed along about one teacher being evil, seniors stuffing you in a locker… you know. There’s worry about not being in classes ‘With your best friends, and getting lost in the building. But, really, what’s to fear?
At first, all this chatter of high school seemed like a lot, but taking a look at the Leavitt Area High School program of studies, I start to see that they have some really interesting classes. The school offers the the usual Biology, English, stuff like that, but also has creative writing, painting, and psychology. I would love to take some classes like that, and with electives, I won’t be stuck taking classes that I absolutely hate. Also, all freshmen have to take mostly the same classes, so there’s a pretty good chance I’ll have some friends in most of my classes.
What I see as most daunting is that it seems as though you have to pick your career right here and now. I have a few ideas in mind, but this is a pretty huge decision. I’m starting to realize that I’ve got plenty of time to think it over, because my mom said she switched her major three times in college!
I’m really excited to start the adventure that is high school, and now that I’ve thought about it, it doesn’t really seem so looming. There will be a few struggles and bumps in the road, but I don’t think it will be that terrible after all.
