Dear Sun Spots: I would like to know where in Lewiston or Auburn or nearby where I can go to get repairs to screen doors or windows. In the past, Pontbriand’s Hardware did such work but, alas, it is no longer in business. Please print the name and telephone of anyone who can help. Thanks. – Jerry, Lewiston.

Answer:
Drop off your screens for repair at Petro’s Ace Hardware & Landscape Center, 965 Minot Ave., Auburn, 783-0447. Also, Handy True Value Hardware, 9 Depot Square, Mechanic Falls, 345-2091. You may call first to be sure someone is there to fix the screen. You can bring them to Drillen True Value Hardware, 1086 Sabattus St., Lewiston, 783-4600. Also consider checking your local home improvement center or hardware store for do-it-yourself repair kits.

Dear Sun Spots: In response to the inquiry on Tuesday, April, 22, 2008, about the origin of the symbolism of the caduceus, the snake on a staff for a sign of healing, it actually goes back further than Greek mythology. The snake on the staff was used to heal people in Moses’ time in the Old Testament. See Numbers 21:4-9: Then they set out from Mount Hor by the way of the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom; and the people became impatient because of the journey. And the people spoke against God and Moses, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and we loathe this miserable food.” And the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people and they bit the people, so that many people of Israel died. So the people came to Moses and said, “We have sinned, because we have spoken against the LORD and you; intercede with the LORD, that He may remove the serpents from us.” And Moses interceded for the people. Then the LORD said to Moses, “Make a fiery [serpent,] and set it on a standard; and it shall come about, that everyone who is bitten, when he looks at it, he shall live.” And Moses made a bronze serpent and set it on the standard; and it came about, that if a serpent bit any man, when he looked to the bronze serpent, he lived.
