LIVERMORE FALLS – SAD 36 directors will consider a proposal Thursday to return to a one-bus-run system to transport students to school.

The district had the system in place for two school years before returning to a double run, transporting older students and younger students separately this year.

Transportation and Maintenance Director Ken Vining said Superintendent Terry Despres had discussed the plan with him and will bring it to the board at the 7 p.m., May 8 meeting at the Cedar Learning Complex.

It would mean students at all levels would attend school from about 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Vining said.

“I think that the main reason right now is state funding, fuel costs and to cut back on the mileage,” he said.

Diesel is running around $4.50 a gallon right now, he added and last year it was about $2 a gallon.

SAD 36 returned to two bus runs because the state wasn’t able to provide needed money for new buses.

The district has been accepted by the state to buy two new buses and to receive reimbursement for them, Vining said. The state pays for the buses as long as they adhere to state specifications, he added.

When the one run system was in place previously, monitors rode on the bus.

Also on the agenda Thursday is a discussion of a time-frame for votes on the proposed $9.28 million school budget.
