Edward Little High School exhibited its depth and versatility Tuesday in a convincing 137-113 girls’ track win over Waterville in a four-team meet at Lawrence High School.

Muriel Schwinn (100 meters, long jump) and Danielle Paul (800 and 3,200) each logged a pair of individual victories for the Red Eddies, who also captured two of the three relay races. Emily Dodge prevailed in 100-meter hurdles, while Christie Bernier (no surprise) led a 1-2-3 sweep in the racewalk. Abby Downs won the high jump, as well.

Number crunching was a more agonizing process for the EL boys, who dropped the meet to Waterville by the minimum one-half of a point.

Tyler Gammon was the running standout for the Eddies, winning the 800, scoring second in the 3,200, and running a leg of the victorious 4×800 relay.

Field events again are a strength for EL. Dylon Therrien topped the shot put and javelin, with Josh Clark pacing pole vault and Ben Hartnett ruling high jump.

Job share

Lewiston High School track athletes are benefiting from a lower pupil-to-teacher ratio this year. After nine years in command of both the Blue Devils boys’ and girls’ running programs, Ray Putnam has delegated the girls’ outdoor track head coaching duties to Kevin Russell.

“I’ve had three seasons out of the year where I’ve coached boys and girls,” said Putnam. “Now I’m only coaching the boys and it’s like I’m on vacation. I don’t have to be two different people.”

Russell has worked with the Devils in the past. As for his credentials, consider his own career, one that is still in progress. Russell was a national champion in the 35-and-over division in 2007, covering the 100 meters in a world-class 10.3 seconds.

“The girls’ track and field team at Lewiston has been in the shadows of the boys’ team,” Russell said. “Our goal for this season is to show people that we’re here and we have a strong girls’ program, also.”

Good Knights

Poland Regional High School is off to a strong start in the Class B division of the Western Maine Conference. The Knights hosted a successful meet last weekend, tying Falmouth for the boys’ victory and running a close second in the girls’ competition.

T.J. England swept both hurdles races and the triple jump for Poland. Nick Williams was a double winner at 400 and 800. The Knights also celebrated victories in 100, javelin and the 4×100 relay.

Brittany Bell’s victories at 200 and 400 boosted the girls. Other winners included Paige Piper (javelin), Chelsea Bernardo (high jump) and Danni Belanger (100 hurdles).
