LEWISTON – So much for seniors mailing it in at this advanced stage of the school year.

Julia Bergeron’s physical and emotional investment in running a Lewiston High School field day obstacle course left her with nothing to give in her first after-school tennis match of the week, a straight-set loss to Adrienne Jaeger of Morse.

A day later, Bergeron carried a hodgepodge of conflicting emotions – vengeance, perhaps a little lingering disappointment, and plain old nerves – into her chance to get back on the winning track against Erskine Academy. Beth Preston was merely the unfortunate opponent in the way.

Bergeron was one of three love-love singles winners Thursday for the undefeated Blue Devils in a 5-0 blanking of the Eagles.

“I was a little tentative today, because I lost my last match. After Senior Day, I didn’t have that much energy left,” Bergeron admitted. “I was still a little nervous. I didn’t play full speed.”

This was one of those all-too-frequent days in the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference when loaded Lewiston – five times the defending Class A boys’ champion and winners of two straight girls’ crowns – made it look effortless. The Blue Devils also spun a shutout in the boys’ match.

Life should get tougher, particularly for the boys, when both teams travel to Mt. Ararat this afternoon.

“Mt. Ararat is one of the tougher teams we play,” said Bergeron. “Everybody’s getting into game mode.”

Chantalle Lavertu and Audrey Bergeron also rolled to victory without losing a game.

Girls’ second doubles provided the most compelling action of the clean sweep. Abby Blaisdell and Samantha Ricker dispatched Katey Reitchel and Danielle Johnson, 6-4, 6-3, in a 90-minute match loaded with long rallies.

“This was the toughest match. It was last time we played, too,” said Lewiston girls’ coach Anita Murphy. “That was one of the best matches they’ve had.”

Emilie Cloutier and Emily Parent nearly notched the fourth double-bagel of the match but settled for a 6-0, 6-1 triumph over Astrid Gleaton and Renee Robillard.

Two youthful doubles teams served up zeroes for the Lewiston boys. Neither the freshman tandem of Scott Gagne and Eric Hall nor the combination of senior Devyn Cote and freshman Alex Chicoine dropped a game.

“They don’t have a lot of doubles experience, because not a lot of kids play doubles. When you think tennis, you think singles,” said Lewiston coach Ron Chicoine.

Lewiston’s lineup is somewhat of a science experiment when the Blue Devils take advantage of their depth against lesser KVAC foes. Gagne, Alex Chicoine and Spencer Ouellette played singles at Morse Wednesday while the champs’ top four players took a breather.

While they wouldn’t have been in any danger with a young lineup against Erskine, the Devils commissioned what should be their playoff ladder in preparation for today’s showdown in Topsham.

Mike Butler, Ben McDonough and Matt Letourneau lost a combined two games in their victories.

“Coach wanted us all playing our normal spots just to get in the rhythm of things,” Cote said.

Julia Bergeron said she is thankful for low-key practices that allow her team to devote all their energy, field days notwithstanding, to live matches.

The opposite is true for the boys, whose intra-squad activities are a case of iron sharpening iron.

“We practice hard. Our practices are (often) harder than our matches,” said coach Chicoine. “I have alumni like Mike Burke who came back and played my singles players one guy each day this week. Butler went three sets with him. That’s good for him to get ready for the tournament.”
