STANDISH – Mason Roberge and Andrew Kierstead pitched strong games for St. Joseph’s Thursday afternoon, as it swept a doubleheader with Suffolk, 8-1 and 2-0.
In the opener, Roberge came on in relief of Kyle Dorr and effectively shot Suffolk’s offense down for the day. Wade Oliver led the Monks (27-16) with a two-run home run, while Eric LaBatte belted a pair of hits with two RBIs.
In the nightcap, Kierstead hurled seven innings of two-hit baseball while the Monks’ (28-16) offense did just enough to secure the sweep. Ben Grant-Roy led St. Joe’s with two hits and one RBI.
USM 14, E. Conn. 3
KEENEM NH – Third-seeded University of Southern Maine pounded out 21 hits and got solid pitching from a sophomore as they rolled to a 14-3 victory over Eastern Connecticut in day two of the Little East Conference championship.
Sophomore left-hander Mark Schmidt hurled his first career complete game for the Huskies (31-10), allowing eight hits and walking six with four strikeouts on the day.
