KEENEM NH – Third-seeded University of Southern Maine pounded out 21 hits and got solid pitching from a sophomore as they rolled to a 14-3 victory over Eastern Connecticut in day two of the 2008 Little East Conference baseball championship Thursday.

Sophomore left-hander Mark Schmidt hurled his first career complete game for the Huskies (31-10), allowing eight hits and walking six with four strikeouts on the day. Ryan Pike led Southern Maine with five hits, highlighted by a home run and two RBIs. The Huskies blew things open with six runs in the sixth inning.

Eastern Connecticut grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first before UASM answered with three runs in the second. John Parke and Jon Dalton led their offensive effort with two hits apiece.
