RANGELEY – Two people were injured when the car they were riding in collided with a moose on Route 4 on Wednesday night.
The moose died and was later picked up by state transportation workers.
Charles “Doc” Bliss, 90, of Rangeley Plantation, and his passenger, Peggy Murray, 67, whose residence was not available Thursday afternoon, were headed south on Route 4 from Oquossoc village to Rangeley at about 8:25 p.m. when a moose ran in front of the car, police officer Brian Hughes said.
Witnesses said the Subaru station wagon hit the moose near Mingo Loop, he said.
The estimated 800-pound cow moose fell on the windshield and rolled over the top of the car, busting out all the windows, and then rolled off the back onto the ground and into a ditch, the officer said.
Bliss and Murray each had several lacerations to their face and hands, Hughes said.
They were taken by NorthStar ambulance to Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington where they were treated and released.
Police are warning motorists to be on the lookout for the large animals as they start to venture to the roads to get out of the woods.
“We’re into the full swing of moose-accident season,” Hughes said. “The summer months through the early fall moose are found everywhere, especially tar roads to get away from bugs and heat, and to lick salt and calcium deposits off the road.”
