As a member of the Mexico Budget Committee this year, I attended budget meetings and was convinced that most of the selectmen and budget committee were thinking there was to be no cutting of services or budgets.

I turned in my resignation, feeling I could do better things with my time.

Now that the budget is set, it is up to the people.

Unlike all the surrounding towns, Mexico officials have spent, spent, spent. The proposed budget is now $282,768 more than last year’s.

Are we not as smart as the surrounding townspeople? They managed to cut and control spending.

Now, the only choice to bring some control in spending for Mexico is to vote “no.” That will not cripple the town. The town will not shut down. Last year’s budget figures would be used and the town would operate on those amounts.

The six or seven top salaried town employees do not even live in Mexico, so what do they care how high taxes go?

It is time for residents to do what we have told our children to do for years – “Just say ‘no.'”

The public hearing on the budget is May 21. Residents should attend. The vote comes in June.
