DIXFIELD – The Dirigo baseball team has been able to put everything in motion, and it was very evident on Friday.
The Cougars ended their week on an upbeat note, while the rest of the Mountain Valley Conference is in the path of destruction.
Junior Aaron Fenstermacher had two RBIs and the rest of the batting order followed suit in a 10-0 win against Telstar at Harlow Park.
Jon Smith pitched a two-hitter over five innings before the mercy rule was applied.
Dirigo (6-1) has been on a roll, scoring 36 runs in the last 16 innings, while the team’s earned run average is below 1.00. They beat Wiscasset 1-0 in 10 innings and crushed Madison 25-5 on Wednesday.
“In the past our pitching and defense has been there,” Dirigo coach Dave Lafleur said. “Now we are turning the corner and this could be special. We’ve worked hard on the team hitting and it is beginning to pay off. The kids are seeing it through at the plate.”
Telstar (1-4) simply wasn’t able keep pace and added to its shortage by making several miscues in the field. The Rebels started their season late and the team hasn’t been able to get anything positive going.
Dirigo scored three runs in three innings against Telstar pitcher Mike Fleet (1-1), who experienced control trouble. Derek Daley led off the bottom of the first with a single, stole second and scored on a James Moulton single. Dekota Holmquist (two hits) laid down a perfect drag bunt score Fenstermacher, who also had two RBI ground-outs.
“We’ve been practicing curves and more curve balls,” Daley said. “The team hasn’t been hitting very well, but today we broke out of our shell. We also were able to take advantage of their mistakes.”
The Cougars’ Levi Hutchins (two runs) and Tyler Gates (two hits, two runs) each trotted home on bases-loaded walks in the fourth. Eric Bolduc raced home and also was solid defensively at shortstop.
Telstar received singles by Bryce Walker and Gavin Broomhall and only had one baserunner reach second base. In the fourth, Broomhall and Kyle Maines were on base, but Smith induced Jamie Kimball to pop up and Ryan Lafleur caught Ben Cross’ fly ball on the warning track in right field.
“A key for us was being patient at the plate,”Lafleur said, who scored two runs. “Our pitching and defense has been there, but now we are also hitting the ball.”
Dirigo scored four in the fifth to end the game.
