MINOT – Minot Hebron Athletics Association and Republic Jewelry & Collectibles will host a free Aquafina Major League Baseball Pitch, Hit & Run Competition for area youth at 2 p.m. today. The competition will be held at the Minot ballfield complex behind the fire station.

Pitch, Hit and Run is the official skills competition of Major League Baseball. This grassroots program is designed to provide youngsters with an opportunity to compete, free of charge, in a competition that recognizes individual excellence in core baseball skills.

Competitors are divided into four age divisions – 7/8, 9/10 11/12, 13/14 – and have the chance to advance through four levels of competition. Top performers advance to the state competition in Bangor on May 31. The top performers in each New England state then have the opportunity to compete at Fenway Park on June 7. National Finals will take place in conjunction with the 2008 MLB All-Star Game in New York in July. Ages for the competbaseball cards from Republic Jewelry & Collectibles. “We feel it is a fun competition for kids, and we have supported this program for quite a few years,” said Dan Cunliffe II of Republic. “It offers area kids a chance for a wonderful opportunity to possibly play on the field at Fenway and move on to play at the All-Star Game. It’s the kind of thing most kids dream about.”

All participants must bring a copy of their birth certificate and fill out a registration/waiver form prior to the start of the competition. Peru Babe Ruth tryouts

PERU – Peru will hold Babe Ruth baseball tryouts at the elementary school field at 5 p.m. today.

Players must be ages 13 to 15, If you turn 16 on or after May 1, you may play this year.

The team’s first game is Sunday, May 18, starting a schedule of 13 games in the Tri-County Babe Ruth League. Games will be played every Sunday, Monday and Wednesday from May 26 until the end of June, followed by playoffs.
