DURHAM, N.H. – Junior James Spaulding of Lewiston won decathlon Friday at the New England Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Association Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
With the victory, Spaulding became the first Southern Maine men’s track and field competitor to win an event at the NEIcAAA Championships. His two-day total of 6,286 points was 35 points better than his previous personal best set back in April at Holy Cross. Other Southern Maine athletes competing were Curtis Wheeler, who placed fifth in the 5,000 meters with a time of 14-minutes and 31.92-seconds. Wheeler’s twin brother, Nick was eighth in the 10,000 meters (31:23.75) while sophomore Tyler Jasud of Rumford placed ninth in the 5,000 (14:56.1).
Bates College senior Noah Gauthier took second place in the hammer throw (185-feet, 9-inches) with teammate Rich McNeil finishing in fifth.
Other Bates’ competitors included Doug Brecher who finished sixth and established a personal best (31:15.65) in the 10,000 with Matthew Dunlap of Farmington (31:57.02) finishing 14th in the same event.
