LIVERMORE FALLS – Fire Department Assistant Chief Marvin Parker will become chief when Ken Jones leaves in June, it was announced at Monday night’s meeting of the selectmen.
Jones has taken a full-time fire chief position in Meredith, N.H., and will begin his new job June 5.
After a lengthy discussion on how to handle filling the chief and assistant chief positions, it came down to the bylaws of the Livermore Falls Firefighters’ Association.
Town Manager Martin Puckett said selectmen did not have to vote on Parker’s promotion because the bylaws state that in the absence of the chief, the assistant moves up.
The firefighters’ association will elect a new assistant chief, and that recommendation will go before selectmen for appointment.
Board of Selectmen Chairwoman Jackie Knight asked that the membership vote before their next scheduled meeting June 3, so a new assistant chief will be in place before Jones leaves.
Parker said he would advise all candidates of the job responsibilities prior to the vote.
Prior to the selectmen meeting, voters approved three articles in a special meeting moderated by lawyer Clint Boothby of Livermore.
Voters accepted a Community Development Block Grant for $150,000 to help businesses fix up facades. Grant applications will be reviewed by a committee, yet to be chosen. Businesses would have to meet financial criteria as well as put in a match of $1 for each grant dollar. The maximum grant is $25,000.
Voters also approved transferring $30,000 from the undesignated surplus account to public works account to allow work to continue through June.
Voters also agreed to transfer $9,017 from the surplus account to the buildings and administration accounts. The $5,601 for the buildings account was to cover an overdraft that was caused when an electrical switch on the backup generator that provides electricity to emergency dispatch, police station and the town office malfunctioned and needed to be replaced. The $3,416 needed for administration was to cover higher lien costs and postage expenses, Town Manager Puckett said.
In other matters, Jones informed selectmen that the new tanker bought last year has a leak and is at the manufacturer’s to be repaired. He advised the manufacturer that if problems persist the department would want a new truck to replace it. At the request of Selectman Louise Chabot, he would have that put in writing so the town would have something to fall back on.
