AVON – Traffic on Route 4 between Strong and Avon was diverted to Route 149 Monday after a trash hauler overturned south of the Avon Mall.

Matthew Walton, 26, of Lewiston, driving a 1991 Mack truck south from Rangeley, went onto a soft shoulder as he came around a curve, said Trooper Mathew Casavant. The vehicle went several feet before tipping onto its side and losing its contents, primarily old Sheetrock and furniture. The vehicle, owned by Archie’s Inc. of Mexico, was destroyed, Casavant said.

Walton received minor cuts and scrapes in the 4:13 p.m. crash and was transported to Franklin Memorial Hospital by NorthStar, Casavant said.

A motorist, Jennica Wyman, was traveling north when she came upon the scene, she said. The driver was climbing out of the truck window and was bleeding from a cut on his face. Wyman went to a nearby house and called 911.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

The portion of Route 4 from Avon to Strong was shut down until the truck could be taken out of the road, said Phillips Fire Chief Jim Gould.

Police and firefighters were waiting for a wrecker and a representative from the Maine Department of Transportation to inspect the road before the contents in the truck could be taken from the scene.
