Club speaker
AUBURN – The Woman’s Literary Union Garden Club will meet at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 15, at the clubhouse, 19 Elm St. Nancy Coverstone, executive educator, University of Maine Cooperative Extension Service, will be the speaker.
Members will learn how to attract and identify backyard birds. Hospitality will be provided by Phyllis Splain. Refreshments will be served and guests are welcome.
Memorial service
AUBURN – Liberty Rebekah Lodge 94 will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday, May 19, in the activities room at the Odd Fellows and Rebekahs Home, 85 Caron Lane.
As the members gather, snacks will be available. At 6:50 p.m. a memorial service for members who died during the year will be led by Chaplain Priscilla Campbell. A business meeting will follow, when events to take place during the district meeting will be discussed.
The district meeting was postponed from Saturday, May 10, to Saturday, May 31. Nina Rebekah Lodge will serve a smothered beef dinner at noon at the Odd Fellows Hall in Lisbon. The meeting will follow with Debbie Smith, district deputy president, presiding.
May 18 is designated as Go To Church Sunday when Rebekahs all over the state will gather in their districts to attend a church in their area. Liberty Lodge members have been invited to join with Nina Rebekah Lodge members in Lisbon.
Lifeguard class
AUBURN – The YMCA of Auburn-Lewiston will offer an American Red Cross lifeguard certification course three nights a week from May 20 to June 9 from approximately 6 to 10 p.m.
There are several prerequisites for the course, including a 300-yard swim, and participants must be at least age 15 before the last scheduled class. Upon completion of the course the lifeguarding/first aid certificates are valid for three years, and the CPR expires after one year.
Course fee is $210, including materials. Registration is open, but class size is limited. There may be space for those needing to recertify in CPR-FPR. For more information, call 795-4095, e-mail [email protected], or stop by the YMCA at 62 Turner St.
Grange CWA Night
GREENE – Androscoggin Grange 8 will meet on Thursday, May 22, with a 6 p.m. supper followed by a 7 p.m. meeting. It will be CWA Night with the women filling the chairs along with special guests and entertainment. All Grangers are welcome. For more information, call Karen Flagg at 225-2312.
Guided hikes
NEW GLOUCESTER – Guided hikes through the fields, forest, streams and lake that comprise part of Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village will begin on Saturday, May 24, at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
The natural history of the village will be revealed as the participants walk and view such landmarks as Aurelia’s Cascade and Sabbathday Lake as well as view seasonal flora and fauna. There is a fee. Reservations are recommended by calling 926-4597.
Report training
LEWISTON – Professionals who works with children are mandated by law to report suspected abuse or neglect of a child can take a workshop from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 27.
Participants will learn what it means to be a mandated reporter and how to recognize the signs and symptoms of abuse.
The workshop will be offered at Advocates For Children, B Street Community Center, 57 Birch St.

Social bridge
LEWISTON – The Lewiston-Auburn Social Bridge Club winners at the Multi-Purpose Center on May 12 were: first, Jan Arey and Linda Leotsakos; second, Martine Begert and Larry Fortier; third/first in B, Cynthia and Bill Clifford; fourth/second in B, Marta Clements and Nancy Farmer; fifth, Dick Allen and Richard Balian; third in B, Cynthia Bonsey and Sue Kaluzynski; first in C, Bev Dolan and Fred Bates.
Games are played at 9 a.m. Mondays and a partner is guaranteed. All bridge players are welcome. Call Rosemarie Goodwin at 754-1431.
Bridge play
LEWISTON – The Lewiston-Auburn Duplicate Bridge Club met at the Multi-Purpose Center on May 6. Flight A winners were: first, Mike Quinn and Luke Merry; second, Fred Letourneau and Jeanine Kivus; third, Martine Begert and Rosemarie Goodwin; fourth, Richard Balian and Lucille Theriault; tied at fifth, Leslie Buzzell and Nancy Lindgren with Lucille Bilodeau and Alberta Turner.
Flight B winners were: first, Lucille Bilodeau and Alberta Turner; second, Susan Kaluzynsky and Donna Bartlett. Another game will be played at the center on Tuesday, May 13.
The club also met on May 7 at Schooner Estates in Auburn. Winners in Flight A were: first, Fred Letourneau and Rosemarie Goodwin; second, Mike and Pat Quinn; third, John Hackett and Leslie Buzzell; fourth, Mary Leahey and Claire Lyons.
Winners in Flight B were Alberta Turner and Lucille Bilodeau. Another game will be played on Wednesday, May 14, at Schooner Estates. A partner is guaranteed at both games.
