FARMINGTON – The SAD 9 board voted Tuesday to accept a list of teachers nominated for renewed contracts and discussed teacher layoffs and open positions.

Assistant Superintendent Susan Pratt said that five teachers, both part time and full time, have been cut for the 2008-09 school year.

“Let me say that it is a very elaborate process to eliminate a teacher,” Pratt said, adding that there are 13 steps to follow.

She noted that there are several open teaching positions in the district: a high school math teacher, a part-time elementary music teacher and two guidance positions.

Director Joyce Morton asked whether any of the five teachers who were laid off could fill the open positions. Pratt said that information was not available, but she added that she encouraged all teachers to continue to apply for positions with the school district.

Directors were reminded that the district budget meeting will be held at 7 p.m. May 22 and the budget vote will take place on May 28.
