JAY – A Jay woman died Tuesday morning after a truck hauling a camper went through a red light on Route 4 at Riley Road and broadsided her car, Jay police Chief Larry White Sr. said.

Linda Latham, 61, was driving from Riley Road and turning left onto Route 4 to go north when her Ford Taurus was struck on the driver’s side by a F550 truck driven south on Route 4 by Howard Davis, 68, of Carlisle, Pa., White said.

Jay firefighters rushed to the scene, taking off the doors and roof of Latham’s car to get her out. She died soon after in the ambulance, White said.

Nearby resident Thomas Dion said he heard the accident, which happened about 10:40 a.m., and ran to see if he could help. When he saw how badly Latham was hurt, he ran back to his house and had his wife, Ada, call 911 and he grabbed his pry bar and ran back to the scene, he said.

Neither Davis nor his wife, Florence Davis, were injured, White said. They had been visiting relatives and Farmington.

Davis was issued a summons on a charge of failure to stop for a traffic light, the chief said.

All occupants of the vehicles were wearing seat belts, he said.

Maine State Police Trooper Jeffrey Beache is reconstructing the accident along with a state police investigation-mapping unit, White said.

Blood alcohol tests were done on both drivers, he said, and a full report will be submitted to the Franklin County District Attorney’s Office for review.

Jay police Cpl. Jeffrey Fournier, detective Drew Hufnagel and White assisted in the investigation.

Firefighters rerouted traffic around Route 4 for three hours.
