LITCHFIELD – Louise Mable (Briggs) Gamage, 95, died at her home in Litchfield, on April 21.
She was born on Aug. 17, 1912, in Minot, the daughter of Frank and Lila S. (Libby) Briggs. She graduated with high honors from Edward Little High School in 1930; attended A.I.M. University of Massachusetts, summer session, attended Eastman School of Music, Rochester University in Rochester, N.Y., majoring in voice and piano.
In June 1934, she married Harold W. Gamage; they made their home in Litchfield, Lyme, N.H., and Augusta, before returning to Litchfield for the past 63 years. She was a very active member for more than 59 years in the Litchfield Grange, holding many offices.
She played the organ and piano for more than 25 years for the Federated Community Church of Litchfield, the Order of Eastern Star and the Litchfield Grange. She held many positions in the Eastern Star, Mystic Chapter 69 in Litchfield and was a member for 49 years. She was a Past Worthy Matron in 1969. She loved to sing and sang for many years in the church, grange and Eastern Star.
On June 18, 2007, she received a Sentiment Award from Rep. Nancy Smith at the State House in recognition for all her years of community service as a volunteer as a Gray Lady at the Veterans’ Hospital, her work at the Blaine House (governor’s home) for more than 30 years; she received the Litchfield (Boston replica) Cane for the oldest citizen of Litchfield. She volunteered her time in the Litchfield schools, teaching music because there was no music program available for the children.
She is survived by a son, Nelson and his wife, Mary Lou (Gordon) Gamage, of Litchfield; a daughter, Marilyn (Gamage) Lyon and her husband, Arvah, of Davenport, Fla., and Litchfield; five grandchildren in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Arizona and Vermont; 10 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Harold W. Gamage; three sisters, Irene Gamage, Mary Seabrook and Florence Smith; and two brothers, Bernard and Lawrence Briggs.
