OXFORD – Like a lot of proud fathers, Travis Adams used the birth of his second child as an inspiration. The Canton native earned his second straight and 26th career feature victory in the Oxford Networks Late Model feature Saturday night at Oxford Plains Speedway.
Adams got the jump over Late Model rookie Jimmy Childs on a lap-18 restart, then drove away for another dominating victory. Carey Martin came from sixth on the grid to finish second, while Childs edged Dale Verrill for third. Oxford veteran Tommy Ricker, who ran second for the first 20 laps or so, faded slightly at the finish but hung on for fifth.
“It’s been a real privilege to drive this race car,” said Adams in Victory Lane. “My father built me a really strong engine. It has plenty of power and holds up well the whole race. My wife is home tonight taking care of our new son, and I’m really proud to have won for him. One of my crew member’s wives also had a baby this past Friday, so I’m proud to do so well tonight for them. This is a great way to celebrate for my entire team and family.”
Skip Tripp, Don Mooney, Jake Burns, Gregg Norton, and Charlie Webster were also feature winners on Sun Journal night at the speedway.
Finishing sixth through 10th in the Late Model feature were Shawn Martin, Ben Ashline, Billy Childs Jr., Shawn Knight and Ricky Rolfe. Sixteen cars finished on the lead lap, while all 22 starters were running at the finish. Four cautions slowed the pace, the worst on lap 19 when Travis Stearns slammed the outside retaining wall at the exit of Turn 2. After a brief red flag, Stearns walked away under his own power while the fans cheered with relief. Four drivers took a turn up front, with Kurt Hewins, Donnie Wentworth and Childs.
In earlier feature action, Burns came from the fourth starting position to claim the Sport Truck feature. The Gray driver powered his way around the outside of Marvin Hamilton on lap 11 and cruised home for the win. Hamilton hung on for second, while Ross Spurling was third. Ryan Farrar and John Lizotte completed the top five in a caution-free battle for the Wednesday night Sport Truck warriors.
Norton came out on top of a hotly-contested first feature for the Runnin’ Rebels, another of the divisions visiting from Oxford’s Wednesday night Acceleration Series. The Lewiston driver took the lead from Zach Audet on a lap 4 restart and easily pulled away for the victory. Kyle Hewins, one of the hot shoes in this division, made a late-race charge to finish second, while Josh Childs was third. Doug DeGroat and Troy Jordan completed the top five. Only two cautions slowed the pace, neither for serious incident.
Webster saw his hopes for victory go away then come back again in the blink of an eye in the second Runnin’ Rebel feature. The Auburn driver led the first 16 laps before Scott Farrington passed on the inside going through turn 4.
Farrington used a little “bump and run” move to make the pass, which caused starter Kenny Tripp to point the black flag (per race director Randy Varney’s orders) at him as a warning. Thinking the flag was actually unfurled and waved at him, Farrington pulled down pit road expecting to get a stop-and-go penalty. Webster blinked in amazement, then crossed the stripe to secure his surprise win. Derek Cook came all the way from 18th on the grid to finish second, while Nate Guptill edged Matt Dufault for third. Paul Cook rounded out the top five as the wild Rebels capped another successful outing on a higher-profile Saturday night show.
Mooney survived a four-lap dash to the checkered flag as he captured an exciting 30-lap tilt for the Mini Stock division.
The former champion from New Gloucester took the lead from Randy Kimball on lap 13 and fought off the late-race charge of David Mooney for top honors. Kimball hung on for third at the line, while last week’s winner Bill Thibeault was fourth and rookie hotshoe Darrel Moore was fifth.
Tripp had all he could do to hold off Auburn’s Mike Short to claim his second straight Strictly Stock feature. Short worked the high side then tried to slip underneath but all to no avail. Tripp, of Sabattus, is considered the favorite to take the class title this year and looks totally prepared for the challenge. B.J. Chapman came from fifth on the grid to claim third at the line, while Matt Williams and local favorite Sumner Sessions completed the top five. Only one caution slowed the pace in this hard-fought battle for the Strictly Stock gang.
“I didn’t think the car was that fast after the heat race,” said Tripp. “I got together with Sumner (Sessions) at one point and thought it might have affected the car. It was still hooked up at the finish, so I guess we’re in pretty good shape.”
